5 Homeowner Tasks That Are Easy to Forget (But Super Duper Important)

Owning a home means juggling a million little things. Constantly. All the time. In perpetuity. (PS: this is why we do what we do here at Armadillo).

Some tasks are obvious (like mowing the lawn) while others are easy to overlook—until they cause a big (and expensive) problem. Here are five not-so-obvious-often-forgotten reminders that deserve a spot on your to-do list:

 Pump Your Septic Tank

If you’re on a septic system, it needs to be pumped every 2-3 years – depending on how many people live in the house. Forgetting this can lead to backups you definitely don’t want to deal with. A quick call every couple years keeps things flowing smoothly.

 Clean Out the Gutters

Leaves and debris clogging your gutters can cause roof leaks and even basement flooding. A clean-out in spring and fall save you from a soggy surprise later.

 Flush the Water Heater

Over time, sediment builds up in your water heater, making it less efficient. Flushing it once a year helps it run better, last longer, and keeps those showers nice and hot, short and sweet and help keep your bills lower.

 Check Window & Door Seals

Drafts sneak in through worn-out seals and weatherstripping, driving up your energy bill. A quick check and reseal before winter keeps the cozy in and the chill out. And for next summer, the chill in and the hot out.

 Test the Sump Pump

If you have a basement, your sump pump is your flood hero. Pour a little water in the pit to make sure it kicks on. Better to find out now than during a thunderstorm.

💡 Add these to your calendar as yearly (or seasonal) reminders—you’ll thank yourself later. A little prevention goes a long way in keeping your home happy and healthy!
